Preclinical research in the United States
The United States has the largest concentration of preclinical CROs in the world, from global full-service organizations to specialist surgical, CNS and device labs. GLP studies are conducted under 21 CFR Part 58 and inspected by FDA, and most sponsors running an IND will find a US lab with experience in their species and route.
Animal research is regulated under the Animal Welfare Act and, for federally funded work, the Public Health Service Policy, with AAALAC accreditation as a widely used voluntary standard. The biggest clusters are in Massachusetts, the Mid-Atlantic, North Carolina, New Jersey, California, Pennsylvania and Texas; use the state links to narrow by region.
Among the CROs listed in the United States, the most common services are Toxicology, Surgery, Pharmacokinetics and Histology. The species they most often work with are Mouse, Rat and Rabbit.

Questions to ask a CRO in the United States
- Will the study run at the site in United States, or could work be moved to another of your facilities?
- How do you receive test article shipments, and what import permits or customs paperwork do you handle?
- Can our team visit the facility before the study starts and during critical phases?
- Which regulators and GLP monitoring authorities have inspected this site, and when?
- What is your current lead time for our species at this site?
